 What is Current Transformer(CT)?

Current Transformer (CT) is a measuring instrument device which is used for measuring a high current. It transform a higher value to lower value due to which the heavy current flow in transmission line is safely moderated by ammeter. It is a AC measuring device. The primary and secondary current are proportional to each other. This device can measures up to 100 ampere. A current transformer is like a magic ring for electricity. It's a special device that helps measure the flow of electric current in wires without disrupting the power.

Construction of Current Transformer:

The transformer now has a core connected by two wires. One wire connects to the circuit you want to measure, and the other goes to the measuring device. This allows for safe and accurate flow measurements without interfering with the electrical system.
  • Core: At the middle of a modern transformer, there may be a core fabricated from special magnetic cloth. This center is typically within the shape of a ring or donut.
  • Primary Wire: The core is surrounded by a string called the primary denominator. This wire is connected to the electrical conductor through which we wish to measure the current flow
  • Secondary Wire:
  • There is another wire connected to the same core called secondary curvature. Generally, the number of turns in the secondary winding is different from that of the primary winding, which is what acts as a current transformer.
  • Isolation: It is necessary to keep the primary and secondary windings electrically isolated from each other. This ensures that the current transformer is safe to use and poses no risk of electric shock.
  • Output: The secondary winding is connected to a measuring device such as an ammeter or relay. When current flows in the primary reader, current is induced in the secondary reader. This supplied current is a proportional fraction of the current in the primary circuit. It can then be easily measured and used for purposes such as monitoring electricity consumption or protecting electrical equipment.

Working Principal Of Current Transformer:

Current transformer (CT) is an important electrical device for measuring voltage in a safe manner. Think of it as a small, doughnut-shaped coil around a large wire that carries a large amount of electricity. When electricity flows through a large wire, it flows back through the whistle.
Current converters are designed to maintain exact ratios of the currents in their primary and secondary circuits within defined ranges. The successive current of the primary produces an alternating magnetic field in the core, which then produces an alternating current in the secondary.
A horn is made of wire that consists of more wires in its coil than the larger wires around it. This loop difference gives the stream

Types of Current Transformer:

  1. Wound Transformer:- A wound type transformer is a type of transformer in which the main coil known as the primary coil is inserted in the transformer. This basic scope has only one loop and is connected to a current carrying wire. Wound transformers are widely used to measure currents ranging from 1 amp to 100 amps.
  2. Bar Type Transformer:-Bar type current transformer is a special device for measuring current. It is somewhat unusual in that there are only secondary parts. Imagine that: the attached metal becomes as much an integral part of the transformer as the main part.
  3. Toroidal Current Transformer:- Toroidal Current Transformer is a special type of transformer which does not have coils in itself. Instead, they are ring-shaped, and the wire that carries current to the electromagnetic field passes through a hole or window in this ring..
